Charity

Begam Shakya, 3, sits at the wheels of the gigantic chariot of the rain deity, Rato Machhindranath. Every year, the red-faced idol is paraded throughout Patan, and devotees bring rice, flowers and sweets to offer to the deity to pray for good monsoons, abundant harvests and blessings. Scavengers like Begam who cannot afford to buy rice, wait for the devotees’ charity, or simply catch the occasional showers of rice coming from the priests sitting atop the chariot.
